Summary: Great but it lagged for me in the middle
Comment: Events occur that bring Bella closer to her friend Jacob (the indian kid in the first book who first gave Bella the idea that Edward was a vampire). And they become best friends.

Jacob carries Bella through many dark hours. The only ray of sunshine in her otherwise bleak life.

This book MOSTLY develops the relationship of Bella and Jacob, and to absolutely no surprise IMO reveals that the myths about 'the cold ones' that Jacob told before weren't the ONLY myths that were true.

This book could still be quantified as a love story, but doesn't carry the same fresh upbeat feeling of the first novel. I was a bit impatient waiting to get to the part I knew would be coming (I knew it had to), so i read this book rather quickly, and was only satisfied again near the very end.

Here's a teaser

"Yes, fear would have made more sense, but all I felt was an overwhelming satisfaction. THe meadow was a magic place again. A darker magic than I'd expected, to be sure, but magic all the same. Here was the connection I'd sought. THe proof, however remote, that somewhere in the same world where I lived - HE did exist"

Summary: Annoying teen angst
Comment: Twilight, the first in the series, was well worth my time. The second installment, New Moon, gets grating and annoying. Bella's ineptness wears thin, and I begin to wonder what, exactly, is it in Edward that makes all the grieving worth it especially when there is a real character in Jacob in her life. But then again, I've not been a teenager in a while.

Summary: Much better...
Comment: Though Twilight peaked my interest, I found New Moon to be far superior in both writing and story. There is a gloomy and depressing mood that I enjoyed throughout this book. It was darker and more angst-ridden than the first novel and that is where it succeeds. Twilight was all fresh and new and happy-go-lucky. But not much happens. Its true.

New Moon starts off on a pleasant note, but VERY quickly escalates into full-on gloom. Bella is not so boring in this. I could actually feel her pain and it felt very realistic. I was not a big fan of her character in Twilight, but she was much more enjoyable in this.

Jacob gets a MUCH bigger and far more interesting role in New Moon. Pretty much everything is explained regarding him and the veiled mysteries regarding him and his dad from Twilight. Though I am on Team Edward 100%, I did not mind Jacob as much in this book.

Speaking of sparkling Edward, sadly he is missing for far too long in this novel. I'd say-for more than half the book. However, when he is on page, he is by far my favorite character. There is not much to improve on. He is a perfect vampire-what else can you say that hasn't been said already?

I would not call this a masterpiece by any means, but it is a very good read and far better than even Twilight.

Summary: Media frenzy
Comment: I read "New Moon" about 6 months ago after seeing the author's name mentioned in an article about vampire stories. It was OK, I guess--I did get a bit bored by Bella's overreaction to even the sound of Edward's name after he left--I mean, come on, how many times can you fall into the pit of despair and reopen the gaping wound and fill the huge hole where he used to be, etc. I didn't plan to even go ahead and read the first book. There was no talk of a movie and no one I knew had ever heard of the author or the series. Then, suddenly, a few months ago, "Twilight" is everywhere, every high school kid wants to read the books, theatres are sold out of seats for the movie...what did I miss?! I'd really like to meet the spin doctor who pulled this one off. "Twilight", the book, was published in 2005. What happened in those three years to produce this media frenzy?!

Editorial Reviews:

Legions of readers entranced by Twilight are hungry for more and they won't be disappointed. In New Moon, Stephenie Meyer delivers another irresistible combination of romance and suspense with a supernatural twist. The "star-crossed" lovers theme continues as Bella and Edward find themselves facing new obstacles, including a devastating separation, the mysterious appearance of dangerous wolves roaming the forest in Forks, a terrifying threat of revenge from a female vampire and a deliciously sinister encounter with Italy's reigning royal family of vampires, the Volturi. Passionate, riveting, and full of surprising twists and turns, this vampire love saga is well on its way to literary immortality.
