Customer Rating: Summary: Too Bad Comment: Great movies. Variable audio quality. Five out of ten DVD boxes in the shrink-wrapped package were EMPTY. No resolution through customer service because I waited too long. Let the buyer beware. As you can see with other reviews, I was not the only one to receive empty DVD boxes. These movies are available in other boxed sets. Hopefully, all the DVDs will be there.
Customer Rating: Summary: Missing 5 DVDs, but Amazon Customer Service is Great! Comment: I bought this gift for my mother who is a Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers fan. Imagine her disappointment when she opened the collection and found five of the beautifully illustrated DVD cases empty!
I had ordered this set back in November to prepare for Christmas and never checked the reviews before. But thankfully Amazon customer service was agreeable, and refunded me the entire purchase price, letting my mom keep her partial collection with the pretty boxes. I then ordered Collection #1 with the 5 missing DVDs to ship directly to my mom's house. Hopefully those will arrive as an intact set.
So 1 star on the collection, but 5 stars for Amazon Customer Service.
Customer Rating: Summary: Also missing 5 DVDs Comment: I felt like a fool writing to Amazon..."Uh, this set has 5 empty cases." How could I prove it? Why would they believe such a silly claim? But now I see why they responded so promptly and offered such a generous solution. I too was refunded the full price and told to keep the (partial) set. (And I also see why the set is no longer available! Boy, this is not one I'd buy on e-bay!)
So yes, Christmas night was indeed a disappointment. But.....
I can buy the Vol I movies and fill in the empty boxes and have the full collection for less than full price. So, all you who got a half empty set, buy Vol I (which, I admit I have not yet done) and if you actually get some movies, you'll have more than you paid for.
Customer Rating: Summary: Fabulous! Comment: I particularly enjoyed watching the DVDs I ordered, Astair & Rogers, Vol.I. Astaire & Rogers Ultimate Collector's Edition. As I watched this pair, I realized how great they were. I was too young at the time their movies were shown in my hometown and never really was interested in what I thought were ancient movies! So now I play them over and over again! I thoroughly enjoy watching Fred and Ginger each time. The ballroom dancers I see on TV today can't compare to this FABULOUS pair.
Customer Rating: Summary: Dancing Cheek to Cheek: Astaire/Rogers Collections Belongs In Every Film Buff's Library Comment: In the movie, The Green Mile, (starring Tom Hanks and based on a Stephen King novel), there's a poignant scene where the mystical, perhaps holy, John Coffey (played by Michael Clark Duncan in an Academy Award-nominated performance) is granted a final wish by the prison guards who must execute him, even though they know that he is an innocent man. He says that he has never seen a "flicker show." So the guards screen "Top Hat" for him. The child-like Coffey watches in amazement as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dance on the screen. Then he murmurs: "Why, they is angels. Just like up in Heaven."
This scene from The Green Mile resonated for me because I can watch Astaire and Rogers dance in these wonderful films again and again. They move as one, both talented, both sure, both exuding a transcendent star quaility which will probably never be seen again. They are indeed angels. Sure, some of the plots are silly, even leaden. Sure, the dialogue can be contrived. But then these two legends begin to dance, and nothing else matters.
This terrific collection contains all of the movies Astaire and Rogers made together. It should be in every film-lover's library, to be enjoyed repeatedly and shared with children and grandchildren.
