Summary: Horse
Comment: I bought this for my grandson who just got a job helping out walking horses after school. I went through it before giving it to him, and being an old horse-lover myself, I knew it was exactly the right thing for his birthday. I have been thanked profusely! He has filled me in on everything from the horse's ears, to the stamping foot, to the flaring nostrils! I get a new tip every time I see him! He loves it as I knew he would!

Summary: Good Stuff
Comment: I rode English/eventing/dressage for about 10 years as a child/teenager and after a long hiatus I am now riding again. I came upon this book at the local library and have found it to be inspiring and helpful - especially the sections on training and how the author reminds us that every time we are interacting with the horse we are in some capacity training him. It certainly helps me see and understand things from the horses perspective. This book is an absolute JEM - I wish I had read something like this back in my early days. I will definitely be reading more of her books.

Summary: Thinking like a horse
Comment: I believe this is an excellent choice for not only new horse owners (or riders) yet also for those who have been riding horses for awhile.
My grandson is learning to ride English Style and he loves it. His parents just bought him a horse and I actually read this book first and now he and I read it outloud together. I do this because I find that the book is not only interesting, but the little stories in the book are enjoyable while all along teaching a valuable lesson. We have gotten our horse to back up easily with the suggestions in the book. Fun, enjoyable and very knowledgeable book.

Editorial Reviews:

Ask someone who works with horses how best to communicate with a balky colt and she will tell you that horses do not respond to human cajoling. To be successful the human must understand and work with, not against, the horse’s instincts, needs, and fears. When a trainer resorts to human teaching methods — reasoning, begging, bribing, even hugging and kissing — the horse will become confused and unable to respond appropriately. But if horses are treated respectfully with methods they understand, everyone involved — animal and human — will be happier, safer, and more productive.

Horse trainer and instructor Cherry Hill believes that every human/horse relationship benefits from a greater human understanding of what motivates horses, how they experience the world, what makes them happy, and what worries them. Journey through the equine mind with Hill as she explores all that makes a horse tick. How do his basic needs dictate his behavior and mood? What touches and tastes appeal to his senses? How does his “flight or fight” instinct dictate his response to sudden movements?

Hill offers interactive experiments — fun for both horse and human — that bear out her findings on horse behavior. And her final chapter presents simple training methods that draw from the insights and information presented throughout the book.
